Promoting the development of foundation phase learners in under-resourced environments using Ayres Sensory Integration® principles and custom-designed, low-cost playgrounds

Introduction: Children from under-resourced environments often lack opportunities to engage in sensory experiences that support developmental abilities and scholastic performance. “Back Urth” playgrounds were designed address the needs of foundation phase learners communities. A 12-week sensory-motor program, based on Ayres Sensory Integration ® (ASI) principles, was developed, educators trained present this program a playground at rural school Free State. This study aimed determine effect development Grade R 1 learners. Method: Learners two comparable, no-fee schools included experimental non-randomised pre-test-post-test control group design study. one participated (n=40), other served as (n=41). The measured with Bruininks-Oseretsky Test Motor Proficiency 2 nd Edition (Short Form), Revised Ayres-based Clinical Observations, Optima School Readiness Assessment. Results: An improvement scores for both groups, showing statistically greater their Observations Assessment total indicated. Conclusion: research provides evidence components subserving learning can be improved when are exposed within framework ASI , presented by low cost playground.
